Delta Airlines and Daimler adopt IBM Quantum Computing

Daimler and Delta Airlines have partnered with IBM to develop real-world quantum computing applications and have joined the IBM Q Network™.

Daimler wants to research into quantum computing to make lithium-sulfur batteries a viable replacement for lithium-ion cells. The quantum computers from IBM have modeled the behavior of three different lithium-containing molecules. Specifically, simulating these molecules will enable scientists to find their ground state or most stable configuration. For the Mercedes manufacturer, it could result in electric vehicle batteries capable of travelling more than 1,000 km without needing to recharge.

For the airline, it could mean vastly improved route scheduling. Delta wants to explore how quantum computing can be applied to address challenges across the day of travel. (Independent)
